Course Description: ENG 1020 is a course in the process of writing extended essays supported by research. The course includes an introduction to library use, research techniques, and the conventions of MLA and APA styles of documentation as well as practice in critical reading, thinking, and writing across the disciplines. Students can expect to do a series of shorter writing and research assignments leading to the longer, documented paper. Many sections of ENG 1020 include hands-on instruction on the use of the computer in research and writing in a computer lab.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to- use an academic library and electronic research methods to find a variety of credible sources
- evaluate the reliability of sources in light of scholarly and disciplinary expectations
- identify different types of primary and secondary research sources
- recognize and analyze argumentative methods in sources and use these methods in your own writing
- synthesize sources and your own analysis into a coherent and well-organized argumentative essay
- use statistics, judgments, primary research, or authoritative inferences to support reasoning
- write a discipline-based, argumentative paper addressed to an intelligent general reader
- meticulously quote, paraphrase, summarize, and document sources to avoid plagiarism
- correctly use MLA and APA in-text and bibliographic citation styles
